Rotherfield United 7 Woodley Wanderers Lions 2
September 23rd 2006

United were seeking a third successive win this week but faced a confident Wanderers side who were also unbeaten this season. Rotherfield took the lead inside five minutes when a quickly taken throw-in caught Woodley off-guard; the ball fell to Nick Swan who made no mistake in firing into the roof of the net, giving the goalie no chance. A strong Wanderers side came straight back though and notched up an immediate equaliser, when a shot found its way through a crowded penalty area into the United goal.

Mid-way through the half, Rotherfield regained the lead when a Swan corner was volleyed home by the left-foot of Adam Fearnside. They were unlucky not to add a third just before the break when a well-hit free-kick struck the base of the post but then deflected off the keeper to safety.

Right after the restart, Woodley surged forward and grabbed a deserved second goal to level the game at 2-2. With the game in the balance, it took a special moment to separate the sides; Fearnside struck the ball sweetly from the edge of the centre-circle and launched it over the Woodley defense into the roof of their net, and United were back in front.

The fourth soon followed when a Fearnside cross was forced home by Liam Ruiz following a well-timed run into the box. Morgan Green came close to adding a fifth when a curling free-kick convincingly beat the wall but unfortunately missed the top-corner by inches. The two-goal cushion seemed to spur Rotherfield on and Swan added a further three goals in the last five minutes to make the result safe.

The fairplay award was awarded jointly to Fearnside and Swan for a pair of match-winning performances.
