U9 Vipers

Rotherfield 7 Woodley Wanderers 0
May 10th 2008

The Vipers turned up hoping to carry on their excellent start to the season, although it looked like they had arrived at a ploughing match not a football match as the grass was so long. They started the game with excellent inter-changing passes between Nick Swan, Liam Ruiz and Jack Stevens and the whole team was running like a well-oiled engine.

When Wanderers attempted to attack, Jack Williams, Owen Lowe and Kalhan Shah were on hand to mop up anything that came through and broke out of the defence like greyhounds with penetrating runs for the attacking trio to feed off. However, it wasn’t long before Stevens buried a shot into the back of the net, after some excellent one touch football starting from the defence. The Woodley keeper thwarted wave after wave of attacking football; on one occasion, Ruiz broke free, shot, the ball rebounded back to him, which he headed, but the keeper pushed it over the bar. Finally, like a whirlwind Swan with a jinking run and magnificent shot made it 2-0 before half time.

At half time Adam Fearnside was brought into the fold and did not fail to make an impact. His pace caused havoc like an earthquake and it wasn’t long before the Wanderers defence began to crack and Fearnside made it 3-0. The Rotherfield keeper Issac Hylton had a quiet game but when he was called into action he produced the goods and made a terrific save pushing one of Wanderers' attacking shots over the bar.

Williams could have made it four nil when he swooped like a swallow and his headed shot smashed against the bar. Fearnside soon got another two goals in quick succession, giving him his hat-trick. Then some more one touch football followed with Stevens and Swan scoring with some clinical and decisive finishing. The score could have been a lot more if it wasn’t for the great hard-working attitude of the Wanderers team.

The whole team dominated the play and really worked hard as a unit and the Fair Play Award was given to Nick Swan for some excellent team play.
