In extremely hot and sunny conditions Rotherfield produced an extremely accomplished and hard working performance which brought the deserved outcome of a comfortable win.
After last weeks scoreless draw Rotherfield were determined to test the goalkeeper from the kick off. Wave after wave of attack ensued with Roe and Atkinson both going close but an inspired performance by the Burghfield keeper looked like turning it in to another frustrating day for the R’s.
With half time approaching a good move down the right hand side led to Atkinson slipping the ball past the last defender and finding Newbold with just the goalkeeper to beat, there was only one outcome and that was the opening Rotherfield goal. This seemeed to take the wind out of Burghfield’s sails and a second quickly followed with a good run and smart finish by Martinez.
The second half was really a damage limitation exercise for Burghfield as Rotherfield continued to pepper the opposition goal. It was only a matter of time before more goals followed, first Kemp latched on to a William Mullin pass and placed his shot perfectly into the corner, then Luke Mullin tackled the last defender and finished with aplomb from the edge of the area.
Burghfield now threw caution to the wind and went for a consolation goal. Defenders Floyd and William Mullin held strong and made some excellent last ditch challenges and played some superb passes out of defence, it was from one such pass that Newbold was released running from inside his own half to fire home past a shell shocked Burghfield keeper.
The final goal was the pick of the bunch with Martinez firing an unstoppable free kick into the roof of the net from outside the box. A fitting finish to a polished Rotherfield performance that bodes well for the forthcoming campaign.
Effort award went to Luke Mullin for keeping a clean sheet in goal for the last game and first half of this one then coming on to score.
